A Rare Leader of Lasting Inspiration

I first met Youssef more than twenty years ago at a Consultative Group for Early Childhood Care and Development meeting in Istanbul. I was new to the field of early childhood development, and from that very first meeting, he left a lasting impression on me. I remember his disarming smile, his fiery passion for young children, and his quiet presence. He was never one to speak often, but when he did, his words were insightful, courageous, and always forward looking. He inspired me then, and continued to do so throughout the years.
Youssef was a rare leader whose conviction was matched by his humility. The youngest children of the world have lost one of their greatest champions, but his vision and legacy will continue to shape our work and inspire generations to come.
My heartfelt condolences to Kate, to his family, and to all who had the privilege of calling Youssef a friend, colleague, mentor, and partner. May you find strength in the extraordinary life he lived and comfort in the countless lives he touched.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
