We have lost a dedicated and enlightened leader who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of young children not only in the Arab Region but around the world. He was also the dearest of friends to many and probably all of us.

During visits to his and Kate’s lovely home in Southern England, amidst lively discussions, we shared our mutual love of gardens and the wonder of fields of bluebells under shade trees. I always intended to visit them in Cyprus and deeply regret that I never made it.

I am in deep mourning on this day that he was laid to rest in his adopted home of Cyprus, overlooking the waters, hills and trees he loved so.

Youssef was our “co-conspirator” in many initiatives to develop ECD activities in all world regions. His vision was pure, and his commitment was of the highest order. Youssef was noble, sensitive, and, as we can see from the eulogies written for him, truly loved by us all.

Many enlightened ECD programmes in the Arab World can be traced back to his inspiration and dedicated, constant guidance. He was a brilliant planner and a wise and deeply honourable man.

I am heartbroken that Youssef no longer walks amongst us, but I feel sure his spirit will continue to inspire us to carry on and fight for the rights and a better future for all children. We have a unique role to play at this time.

I wrote to Kate late last evening when I first read Ghassan’s beautiful but deeply sad message. I am sure that all of us who know and love her are accompanying Kate in spirit.
