An Architect of Compassion and Care for Young Children (Maysoun Chehab/ Lebanon)
Maysoun Chehab/ Beirut, Lebanon: Chief of Education, UNESCO Regional Office
9 October 2026
Youssef was among the very first people I met in the region whose passion for early childhood was both inspiring and contagious. He did far more than advocate for Early Childhood Care and Education, he helped build a culture around it across the region, one that valued young children, participation, and listening to their voices. His influence can be found in the thinking and practice of so many colleagues and institutions.
I still remember visiting him at his home in Cyprus and the warmth with which he welcomed us. Although he lived outside Syria for many years, his love for his country never faded. Syria was always with him, and his commitment to children in the region remained constant.
He was a brilliant mind, a kind soul, and a generous mentor!
The region has lost one of its quiet builders. My condolences to Kate, and to Ghanem and Ghassan, his partners in crime for so many years.
He will be deeply missed.
