We Communicate For Happy Children

A Message From Dr. Ghassan Issa, ANECD’s General Coordinator, on the Occasion of “World Children’s Day”

20 November 2025

The Silence is Loud Today:
A Celebration for some children is a survival Test for Others.

As we mark the World Children’s Day, pages are filled with smiling faces, corporate pledges to the future, and celebrations of innocence.

It is an attractive concept. Truly.
We should celebrate the potential of every child.
But it is becoming increasingly difficult to celebrate a concept that feels so selectively applied.

How do we speak of “universal rights” when the universality ends at specific borders?

While the world celebrates childhood today, childhood is being systematically dismantled for millions of others.

For a child in Gaza/Palestine, today is not about celebration; it is about surviving another hour.
For a child in Sudan, it is about survival, displacement and hunger.
For a child in Yemen, Syria, or Lebanon, the sound of the sky is not a source of wonder, but a source of trauma.

We cannot champion the rights of children in the abstract “Globe”, while ignoring the annihilation of their rights in devastated countries.

A child’s right to breathe, to learn, and to play should not depend on their geography or geopolitics.

Today, let’s not just post “Happy Children’s Day.”
Let’s ask ourselves why that happiness is a luxury for so many, and what we are doing to demand that every child—regardless of their flag—gets to actually be a child.
